We are proud to announce that Dr. Christine Rodhouse presented her team’s latest findings at the Florida Committee on Trauma Resident and Fellow Paper Competition held in Gainesville, FL this May—and was awarded first place in the Basic Science category! She will now advance to the regional competition this fall.
Dr. Rodhouse’s winning presentation, drawn from the team’s manuscript titled “Sexual Dimorphism in Septic Murine Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells,” highlights critical new insights into the metabolic function of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in sepsis, and how age and sex may influence their pathogenic role in long-term outcomes. This work is a significant contribution to understanding the mechanisms of Persistent Inflammation, Immunosuppression, and Catabolism Syndrome (PICS) in sepsis survivors.
The study was led by Dr. Rodhouse in collaboration with:
-
Miguel Hernandez-Rios, MD
-
Kenneth L. Abbott, MD
-
Angel Charles, MD
-
Dina C. Nacionales, MD
-
Leilani Zeumer-Spataro, BS
-
Alicia M. Mohr, MD
-
Robert Maile, PhD
-
Clayton Mathews, PhD
-
And Principal Investigator, Philip A. Efron, MD
This outstanding achievement reflects not only the caliber of scientific inquiry taking place at the Sepsis and Critical Illness Research Center (SCIRC) and the Department of Surgery at the University of Florida, but also the promising future of surgical scientists like Dr. Rodhouse.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Rodhouse and her co-authors on this well-earned recognition—and best of luck at the regional competition!
