The Sepsis and Critical Illness Research Center (SCIRC) proudly recognizes its resident trainees who participated in the Copeland Resident Paper Competition at the American College of Surgeons Florida Chapter annual meeting. This competitive forum highlights high-quality surgical research conducted by residents across the state of Florida.
Advancing Research and Clinical Impact
SCIRC residents represented the University of Florida with strong presentations focused on advancing the understanding of sepsis, trauma, and critical illness. Their work reflects the center’s commitment to translational research that improves patient outcomes and informs clinical practice.
Participation in the Copeland Resident Paper Competition is a notable achievement. Residents are selected based on the scientific merit of their research and their ability to clearly communicate findings to a multidisciplinary audience. Through this experience, SCIRC trainees demonstrated both academic rigor and a dedication to improving care for critically ill patients.
Dr. Whitman Wiggins was awarded First Place in Basic Science at the Distinguished Edward M. Copeland, MD Resident Paper Competition during the American College of Surgeons Florida Chapter Annual Meeting. His presentation, “Pediatric Burn Injury Is Associated with Monocyte HLA-DR Downregulation and Late-Phase Functional Hyporesponsiveness,” highlights important insights into immune dysfunction following pediatric burn injury and its implications for patient outcomes. Our residents continue to shine through their dedication to advancing surgical research and improving patient care.
Supporting the Next Generation of Surgeon-Scientists
The Copeland Resident Paper Competition supports the development of surgical residents by providing opportunities to present research, receive feedback, and engage with peers and leaders in surgery. SCIRC’s continued participation highlights the strength of its training programs and its focus on mentorship and professional growth.
Commitment to Accessible and Impactful Research
SCIRC is dedicated to advancing research that is not only innovative but also accessible and impactful. Training opportunities such as the Copeland Resident Paper Competition help prepare residents to lead future discoveries in sepsis and critical illness.
