The University of Florida Sepsis and Critical Illness Research Center (SCIRC) has secured a $9 million, six-year renewal from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue its multidisciplinary research into chronic critical illness following sepsis, trauma and severe burns.
Supported by the NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences through the RM1 Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams, the next phase of the research will build on findings from SCIRC’s initial award to better understand why some critically ill patients recover while others experience persistent immune dysfunction and long-term complications. The team ultimately aims to advance precision medicine approaches that can more rapidly identify patients at risk and lead to individualized treatments.
The collaborative program brings together investigators from five UF colleges and is led by principal investigators Philip A. Efron, M.D.; Michael Kladde, Ph.D.; Robert Maile, Ph.D.; and Clayton Mathews, Ph.D.
